Aluminum shavings are the curled or shredded shavings produced during machining processes like turning, milling, planing, and drilling of aluminum or aluminum alloys. Essentially, they are finely divided pieces of aluminum metal, characterized by a silvery-white metallic luster, a lightweight texture, and a high degree of porosity. Due to their large surface area, aluminum shavings are chemically active and easily oxidize in humid environments, releasing hydrogen. Therefore, they must be stored and transported in a dry, well-ventilated area away from sources of fire and water to prevent spontaneous combustion or explosion.


As an important renewable resource, aluminum shavings have two main uses: recycling and direct application.

1. Recycling (Core Use)

This is the primary, most economically valuable, and environmentally significant destination for aluminum shavings. Recycling aluminum smelting consumes only approximately 5% of the energy used for virgin aluminum, significantly conserving resources and energy.

Remelting and Casting Recycled Aluminum Ingots: 

Process: After pre-treatment such as cleaning, degreasing, and compacting, the aluminum shavings are sent to a melting furnace for remelting. 

Products: Molten aluminum is cast into recycled aluminum ingots, serving as high-quality raw material.

Downstream Applications: This recycled aluminum is widely used in the manufacture of various aluminum products, including automotive parts, motorcycle wheels, appliance housings, and hardware accessories, achieving a closed-loop resource cycle.

As a Deoxidizer in Steelmaking.

Principle: During the steelmaking process, oxygen must be removed from molten steel. Aluminum is an extremely strong deoxidizer, reacting rapidly with oxygen to form alumina slag.

Advantages: Aluminum shavings have a large surface area, a fast reaction rate, and high efficiency, and are less expensive than aluminum ingots, making them a cost-effective deoxidizing material for steel mills.

2. Direct Applications

Due to their physical and chemical properties, aluminum shavings also have several specific direct uses. Preparing Aluminum Powder and Aluminum-Silver Paste

Aluminum shavings are an excellent raw material for processing and manufacturing aluminum powder. Through processes such as ball milling, they can be produced into aluminum powder of varying specifications.

Applications: Fireworks and Firecrackers: As a luminous and exothermic agent; Chemical Industry: As a gas-generating agent in the production of aerated concrete (reacting with alkali to produce hydrogen); Coatings Industry: Aluminum shavings are used to make aluminum-silver pastes for the production of anti-corrosion coatings (silver paint) and decorative coatings; Metallurgy Industry: Aluminum shavings are an important raw material for thermite welding, used in railroad track welding and metal smelting.

Chemical Industry and Wastewater Treatment: Leveraging aluminum's reducing properties, aluminum shavings can be used to treat industrial wastewater containing heavy metal ions (such as hexavalent chromium), reducing them to less toxic forms and removing them through precipitation.


Art and Decoration: With its unique metallic texture and curly shape, aluminum shavings are often used by artists and designers as a creative medium for sculptures, decorative objects, and stage sets, creating unique visual effects.

Other Uses: Aluminum shavings are sometimes used as an additive in cleaning and polishing materials, or combined with other materials to create special insulation and heating materials.

Regarding the drilling or not, it depends on the type of briquette press, for vertical briquette press machine, most of vertical baling machine needs drilling and bolting, because it is vertical type, and weight center of the machine is high; and for horizontal briquette press, it no need foundation, drilling and bolting, just put it on horizontal cement ground with thickness more than 150mm.
