Description

Copper shavings, also known as copper chips or copper scraps, refer to the curled or fragmented fine copper shavings produced during machining processes (such as cutting copper rods, tubes, or blocks on lathes, milling machines, and planers).

Main Characteristics:

Morphology: Usually appears as curled, spiral, or elongated fragments, loosely shaped, with a large specific surface area (area occupied by a unit mass);

Composition: Usually pure copper or copper alloys (such as brass and bronze), the specific composition depending on the raw materials being processed;

Source: Primarily originates from metal processing processes in copper product processing plants, machinery manufacturing workshops, and the hardware industry. It is itself a byproduct or waste generated during processing;

Properties: Retains the inherent excellent properties of copper, such as excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, ductility, and antibacterial properties.

Main Uses: Although copper shavings are a byproduct, due to their unique physical form and the inherent properties of copper, they have important applications in many fields.

Chemical and Metallurgical Industries:

1. Catalysts: Due to their large specific surface area, copper shavings are often used as catalysts or catalyst supports in chemical reactions, especially in some organic synthesis reactions;

Metal Displacement: Used in hydrometallurgy to recover less reactive metals from waste liquids or ore leachates through displacement reactions. For example, it is used to recover silver and mercury from silver- or mercury-containing waste liquids;

 Alloy Manufacturing: Copper shavings are recycled as raw materials to produce copper alloys such as bronze and brass. This is its most common and primary recycling application.

2. Education, Demonstration, and Experiments:

Classic Experiment – "Copper Tree": In school chemistry experiments, placing copper shavings in a silver nitrate solution results in a displacement reaction: copper dissolves, while silver precipitates out as beautiful dendritic crystals, resembling a "silver tree," visually demonstrating the differences in the order of metal reactivity;

Other Chemical Demonstrations: Used to demonstrate the reactions of copper with concentrated nitric acid, dilute nitric acid, etc., as their loose form allows for more vigorous and visually intuitive reactions.

3. Art and Creativity:

Handicrafts: Artists and craftspeople utilize the unique color and curled shape of copper shavings as filler or decorative material in the creation of jewelry, decorative paintings, and model scenes (such as mimicking bushes), creating unique textures and visual effects;

Decorative Material: Sometimes it is placed in transparent containers (such as glass bottles) as industrial-style decorations.

4. Functional Uses:

Spark-Resistant Filler: Due to its good thermal conductivity and non-flammability, copper shavings are sometimes used as filler in pipes or containers in flammable and explosive environments (such as chemical plants and gas stations) to prevent static electricity buildup and spark generation;

Thermal Conductive Material: In some temporary or DIY applications, it can be used as filler to enhance heat dissipation.

Electrical Materials: In rare cases, compressed copper shaving blocks may be used to make some low-cost armatures or conductive components, but this is not a mainstream application.

5. Other Special Uses:

Fireworks Manufacturing: Similar to copper granules, extremely fine copper shavings are sometimes used in fireworks, producing a blue flame when burned.

Advantages and Precautions

Advantages:

Cost-Effectiveness: As processing waste, its cost is usually far lower than that of newly purchased copper ingots or copper materials;

High Reaction Efficiency: Its large specific surface area makes it more efficient in chemical reactions;

Recyclable and Environmentally Friendly: Recycling and reusing copper shavings conforms to the principles of a circular economy, reducing resource waste and environmental pollution.

Precautions:

Safe Storage: Copper shavings should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from flammable materials and strong oxidizers (such as nitrates), as their porous structure may pose a risk under certain conditions; Preventing Oxidation: Prolonged exposure to humid air will cause the surface to oxidize, forming green basic copper carbonate (verdigris), affecting its appearance and some performance characteristics.

Separate Storage: Different types of copper alloy shavings (such as pure copper and brass) should be stored separately to facilitate subsequent recycling and utilization, ensuring the purity of the recycled material.

Copper shavings, a byproduct of metalworking, may appear to be waste, but they are actually a valuable resource with a wide range of uses. They not only serve as a vital raw material and catalyst in the metallurgical and chemical industries, but also play a unique role in education, art, and functional fields. Their value lies in combining copper's excellent properties with its unique physical form, thus realizing the resourceful utilization of waste.

FAQ

> How long of warranty time of Copper Chips Metal Scrap Briquette Machine?

The warranty time is 14 months, in another word, 1 year from date of shipping the machine, also you can pay extra cost for long warranty time such as 24 months or 36 months.

> How do I decide the model of Aluminum Chips Briquetting Machine that I need?

First, you need to know what briquette size and bale weight are popular in your local market, then you produce the briquette weight and bale size accordingly, and we can suggest you suitable model of briquette press accordingly, Before this, you need to make investigation in your market, you can inquire your end user etc..

> Does Metal Chip Briquetter Machine have PLC control?

 Yes, the machine has PLC automatic control, easy to operate and more efficient, and also has manual control, easy to debug and maintain the briquette press machine.

> What is voltage of Cast Iron Briquetting Press?

For the voltage of the machine, no need to worry about that, we will customize the motor per your local voltage and frequency, and the important thing that the briquette press machine must need 3 phases electrical power supply.

> What are all the skills required to operate a Aluminum Chips Briquette Machine manufactured by DerShan Group?

No need special skill even if you know nothing about the briquette press just read the user manual carefully before installing, debugging and operating the briquette press machine, and do step by step per the user manual, if you have any questions, feel free to contact with us any time, our technical teams will help you to solve any problems about the briquette press machine.

> Does the installation of Brass chips briquette machine require drilling and bolting into the floor or can stand without drilling?

Regarding the drilling or not, it depends on the type of briquette press, for vertical briquette press machine, most of vertical baling machine needs drilling and bolting, because it is vertical type, and weight center of the machine is high; and for horizontal briquette press, it no need foundation, drilling and bolting, just put it on horizontal cement ground with thickness more than 150mm.

> What is Copper Scrap shavings Briquetting Machine?

The briquette press is mainly used to briquette all kinds of metal chips such as metal chips, steel chips, metal powder, iron powder, aluminium chips, aluminium powder, copper chips, copper powder, copper granules, copper flakes, brass chips, brass swarfs and other metal chips into high density of briquette, easy to transport and stock, save transport cost, storage cost, convenient for recycling center or steel manufacturer to melt again, improve the rate of steel melting, make more profits by using briquette press.
