Description

Scrap copper wire is one of the most common and valuable forms of copper scrap. It originates from a wide range of sources, including:Demolition of buildings (old electrical wiring)、Automotive salvage (vehicle wiring harnesses)、Replacement of telecommunications and power cables、Manufacturing off-cuts from electronics and wire factories、Discarded appliances and electronics (e.g., power cords, transformers).

Recycling scrap copper wire is a major part of the global copper industry, as it is far more energy-efficient to recycle copper than to mine and process new ore from the ground.

Classification and Types of Scrap Copper Wire

The value of scrap copper wire depends heavily on its grade, which is determined by its purity and insulation. The main categories are:

1. Bare Bright Copper Wire:

Description: Clean, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire. It is shiny and free of any solder, paint, burns, or other contaminants;

Source: Typically new production scrap from manufacturing;

Value: Highest. This is the premium grade of copper scrap.

2. Copper Wire:

Description: Clean, unalloyed copper wire that is not necessarily bright and shiny. It may be slightly oxidized but must be free of insulation, coatings, or solder;

Value: Very high, just below Bare Bright.

3. Copper Wire:

Description: Copper wire that has a coating of solder, tin, or other alloy. It may also be oxidized or have a light coating of paint;

Value: Lower than 1 due to the need for extra processing to remove the coatings.

4. Insulated Copper Wire (Low-Grade): This is the most common form recovered from consumers and demolition. Its value depends on the thickness of the wire and the type of insulation.

Categories:

Low Grade: Thin wires (e.g., from extension cords, small electronics). The high insulation-to-copper ratio makes it less valuable;

High Grade: Thick, clean wires (e.g., from household wiring Romex® cable, thick power cords).

How to Prepare Scrap Copper Wire for Recycling

Proper preparation significantly increases the value you receive. The goal is to remove all non-copper materials (insulation, plastic, connectors).

1. Stripping:

What it is: Manually or mechanically removing the plastic or rubber insulation to reveal the clean copper inside;

Methods:

Manual Strippers: Hand-held tools good for small quantities of thick wire;

Automatic Stripping Machines: Ideal for processing large volumes;

Result: Turns insulated wire into highly valuable Bare Bright or 1 Copper.

2. Burning (NOT RECOMMENDED): What it is: Setting a pile of insulated wire on fire to burn off the plastic insulation; Why it's a Problem; Illegal: It violates environmental and air quality laws in most places; Toxic Fumes: Burning PVC insulation releases highly toxic dioxins and furans into the air; Reduces Value: The fire oxidizes and contaminates the copper, often downgrading it to a lower, less valuable category (2 or worse); Fire Hazard.

3. Granulation/Shredding (Industrial Method): What it is: For large-scale recycling, insulated wire is fed into a granulator machine that shreds it into small, rice-sized pieces; Process: The chopped material then goes through a series of separators (air, vibration, water) that separate the heavy copper granules from the light plastic insulation; Result: Clean, separated copper granules and a stream of plastic that can also be recycled.

The Recycling Process and Uses

Once prepared, scrap copper wire enters a formal recycling stream:

Collection & Sorting: Scrap yards collect, weigh, and sort wire by grade;

Processing: Wire is either stripped, shredded, or baled for shipment;

Smelting and Refining: The clean copper is melted in a large furnace. Impurities are skimmed off or removed through electrolysis;

Manufacturing: The refined copper is cast into new shapes like billets, cakes, or rods;

New Products: These are then used to manufacture new copper wire, plumbing tubes, copper sheets, and a vast range of other products;

Uses for Recycled Copper Wire: Recycled copper is chemically identical to newly mined copper. It is used for the exact same applications: New electrical wire and cable,Plumbing pipes and fittings, Electronics components, Automotive radiators and wiring, Construction materials

Why Recycle Scrap Copper Wire?

Economic Value: Copper is a valuable commodity. Recycling it provides income for individuals, scrapyards, and the national economy;

Environmental Sustainability: Recycling copper uses 85-90% less energy than primary production. It reduces the need for mining, which is environmentally disruptive;

Conservation: Copper is a finite resource. Recycling helps conserve it for future generations.

Scrap copper wire is a valuable resource, not waste. Its value is directly tied to its purity. By properly sorting and preparing it—primarily through stripping—you maximize its economic return and its environmental benefit. The recycled copper re-enters the manufacturing stream, creating a circular economy that is both profitable and sustainable.

FAQ

> What kind of wear steel plate does Copper Wire Baling Machine use?

The baler use China famous brand wear steel plate of NM450 or NM500, the NM 450 wear steel plate is durable, stable, anti-wearable, no need to change the wear steel plate in lifetime of the baler machine, and further more, the World famous brand wear plate Hardox 450 is optional, more options for your choice.

> Do you have a agent of Hydraulic Copper scrap Pressing Machine in our country?

By now, we just have a agent in Korea Country;and for other countries, we don't have agent, we directly export the machine to our end users, this way, the price will be lower, and end users can get the baler with lower price than from agent.

> What bale size does the Copper Scrap Shearing And Baling Machine produce?

We can customize the bale size per your requirement, also you can tell us your requirement, we can suggest you suitable bale size accordingly.

> How can i know you are a manufacturer or trader of Hydraulic Copper Scrap Press Machine?

 You can visit our factory personally, also you can ask technical drawings such as 2D drawings 3D Drawings, we have professional technical team working on this, and will not give you these if a trader, because they don't have ability on this.

> What profits can we get from the Copper Scrap Metal Baler?

You need to know price of metal scrap, and price of the bales you sell to metal recycling center or steel manufacturer, then you can know how much profits you will get by the baler.

> What is Scrap Copper Wire Baler?

The baler is mainly used to compress light metal scrap, stainless steel scrap, aluminum scrap, waste tins cans etc into small bales with high density, easy to transport and stock, save transport cost, storage cost, convenient for recycling center or steel manufacturer to melt again, improve the rate of steel melting, make more profits by using baler.

> How do I decide the model of Copper Press Baler Machine that I need?

First, you need to know what bale size and bale weight are popular in your local market, then you produce the bale weight and bale size accordingly, and we can suggest you suitable model of baler accordingly, Before this, you need to make investigation in your market, you can inquire your end user etc..
